Social Media: Fad or Revolution?
From online marketing to research, and everything in between, social media channels are changing the way everyone communicates. During her recent debut on Saturday Night Live, Betty White quipped that Facebook was a giant waste of time. The comment got a lot of applause, since Betty’s SNL appearance was actually spurred by a fan’s Facebook group that went viral, and got the attention of SNL. But could it be true? Will social media turn out to be a blip in the annals of human interaction? Or is social media revolutionizing how we communicate about…well, everything? With stats like those Erik Qualman lists in his book, Socialnomics, I believe the latter.
Some of these stats include:
- One in eight Americans who married last year met online
- 96% of Gen Y’ers have joined one or more social networks
- 80% of companies are using social media to recruit talent
- Generations Y & Z consider email passé
The real question may not be, “Is social media here to stay, or a fad?” but rather, “How will social media evolve over time?” Check out the video, and let us know your opinion.
