I saw a cop learning to ride one yesterday in downtown Tucson. He was accompanied by (I suppose) the Segway master of sorts. I spoke to them briefly and learned it has flashing lights, but no siren. Can you imagine a police officer pulling someone over on this? Through a megaphone, "Hey you, can't you see the red and blues on my Seg?! Pull your bike over/stop walking! Immediately!" Purely ridiculous.

Once I saw multiples. At first I thought some genius was filming a hilarious scene for a movie - I was laughing my head off. Apparently though it was a only a guided tour near the U of Arizona.

In reality though, I find this far too luxurious of an item currently to be utilized by gov't - taxes for ticket writers to have Segways? Lace up your Nike's, bro. Even private business should be unwilling to spend this kind of money to develop a niche - even in Tucson where the elderly flock - the costs will far exceed the ?increased? revenues. Bad economy + new technology = No way.

I live in Chicago, and I have to tell you that I have started seeing more and more Segways recently. There are very successful lakefront tours that employ them for groups. (Great way to cover more ground than could be done on foot - besides - how fun! We are also seeing some police usage. And just today, I saw a security officer in a Target parking lot on a Segway. It may just be one of those things that takes a while to catch on... No death knell yet, as far as I can tell.

I just saw a story on TV about the cardinals using these at training camp, Larry Fitzgerald got it started. He said he is a gadget guy and we know the cost would not be an issue to him? They are a real niche product mainly seen in airports, malls and now football practice fields? Other than that, not a mainstream necessity by any means? Too bad they look really cool, although I would take a bike any day!
